While the Village was jumping to the beat of the "36th Annual Halloween Parade," Midtown was raging with Weezer, Matt & Kim, and PT Walkley, at the Metro PCS Masquerade, presented by 101.9 WRXP. Plenty of fans came out and showed their Halloween spirit, sporting some of the best costumes ever. I ran in to Posh & Becks (John Robinson & Karen Kielczerwski from Jersey), The Grinch that Stole Christmas, Gilligan (minus the other six castaways), and a pothead rocking out with his…well you get the idea. Pope John Paul II even rose from the dead for the festivities. Said Alex Durnan from Port Jefferson, NY, “How many times can you say you got to see Weezer in New York City on Halloween?”
The night started on a high note with a set from local artist PT Walkley. Introduced by Matt Pinfield and Cher - um, I mean Leslie Fram - PT pulled out local favorites, such as "Day Dreaming," "Somebody" and "Lower than the Ocean." The party continued with a costume contest hosted by "Kourageous Kat" Nik Carter. Finalists included Axel & Slash, Dog the Bounty Hunter, a hippo in a tutu, the Mounds and Almond Joy candy bars (cus sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes ya don’t!), Tom Hanks' character from the movie Castaway and a Biggest Loser couple. Prizes ranged from Matt Pinfield’s personal PDA, to concert tickets and CDs.
Brooklyn’s own Matt & Kim brought the holiday cheer with them to the stage, coming out dressed as Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick. They set it off with "It’s A Fact," and came through with crowd pleasers like "Lessons Learned" and "Yeah Yeah." In addition to some on stage acrobatics that include keyboard yoga and drum stands, the duo shot t-shirts into the crowd and blanketed the audience with black and orange balloons. Kim also informed us that Halloween is for "...having a sh*t ton of fun." Based on their set, this was a comment she clearly backed. With the crowd riled, Matt & Kim ended their set with "Daylight," complete with a lead-in comprised of Europe’s "The Final Countdown."
Weezer emerged on stage wearing over-sized bug costumes, and kicked off with the White Stripes’ "Seven Nation Army." Unfortunately the fuzzy, caricatures of a spider, flies and a praying mantis didn’t last for long; the band invited fans up on stage to help them destroy their costumes during "The Sweater Song." The first part of their performance was spent on an awesome trip down memory lane which included "Say It Ain’t So," "Why Bother?," "Beverly Hills" and "Hash Pipe," during which the air over the crowd got rather potent. Then it was on to more recent hits like "I Want You To," "I’m Your Daddy," and "Pork & Beans." The encore included a cover of MGMT’s "Kids," and an interesting semi-solo rendition of "Island in the Sun," where Rivers Cuomo came to the stage, playing various instruments which miraculously kept playing even after he stopped. Half way through the first verse the rest of the band emerges from the shadows, picks up their instruments and begin to play. The raucous set ended with "Buddy Holly." Fans left spent after the almost 2 hour stellar performance. Many thanks to MetroPCS for making this a spectacular Halloween.
